Religion

Does religious belief really quell uneasiness? What would your neurons say?

Religious belief quells uneasiness in life, right? Or that's the main reason why we assume people believe.

But, is this actually true?

A group of scientist took a look at a specific area of the brain for clues.

Science vs Religion: To be Settled by Golden Goal

It's a question that just won't go away. Mary Midgley's comment is free article for the Guardian on 12th June, listed also on the science page, tries to examine whether evolution disproves the existence of God.

I would probably describe myself as an apatheist. I don't believe in God, but this doesn't really bother me, nor does the fact that other people hold opposing views. What I am interested in though is the quality and relevance of the argument.

The Way The World Is

I picked up The Way The World Is: The Christian perspective of a scientist, by theologian and former physicist, John Polkinghorne. I'd really like to understand the thought process that leads some scientists not just to belief in god, but to belief in the doctrines of a specific religion. I'd love to know what argument could trump the scientist's natural inclination to follow the evidence and apply skepticism, or indeed, what evidence the religious scientist thinks that he possesses for the god hypothesis. This book claimed it could do that. It was written specifically for the scientists who had expressed surprise at Polkinghorne's decision to study for the clergy.

Religion, sex and death - election style

It must be election time. The main parties are parading their religious beliefs in order to court what they imagine to be the faith vote.

Both Cameron and Brown's Easter messages are likely to alienate more people than they attract though - both non-believers and people of other faiths. Gordon Brown said that 'the Christian Church is the conscience of our country' and that the visit of the Pope in the autumn would 'make this a special year for the UK'. I'm not sure what meaning of 'special' he was using.

Sexual Abuse of Women in the Church

There has been widespread media coverage of the abuse of children by Catholic priests and few people are now unaware of it.

There has been almost no publicity about the abuse of women by male members of the clergy and, despite the evidence, the Church appears to have done nothing.

Some women do have fully consensual relationships with male clergy but they are a small minority. When their stories make the media, they are usually of the more lurid 'priest has mistress and secret children' variety.

There is some abuse of adult men but a 2008 survey in America found that 96% of the victims were female.

Abuse falls into two categories, congregants and nuns.

Balls to Sex Education

The Government's plans for better sex education in all schools has been watered down by an amendment to the Children, Schools and Families Bill allowing faith schools to 'reflect [their] religious character' in the way PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education) is taught.

The amendment comes after what the Catholic Education Service described as a period of 'extensive lobbying'.

God Squad

Evening all. Constable George Dixon with you again.

Last month I told you about the Home Office giving the Christian Police Association £10,000 to fight crime with the power of prayer.

This month, there's more on prayer and policework. Inspector Roger Bartlett of Devon and Cornwall police has said that he is 'convinced' faith has a positive effect on policing. And he has proof. Let's take a look at that while I have my tea break.

Bloomberg & the Bible

On January 1st 2010, Michael Bloomberg was sworn in as New York Mayor. This past Democrat and Republican is now incumbent as an Independent after campaigning to change the city’s term-limits law to allow his third term.

In the chilly New York air outside City Hall, the re-elected Mayor raised his right hand to Judge Jonathan Lippman and repeated the oath while his left hand dropped to his side.

The Bloomberg family Bible also dipped out of the proceedings, held by his two daughters ‘til he appeared to remember his omission and briefly touched it. Oops.

Pouring Petrol On The Flames

As the season of the Virgin Birth bears down on us, the media is carrying a story about teenagers being given the contraceptive pill 'on demand'.

Reporting varies from the factual to 'The pill is being handed out to teenagers like Smarties, it's the end of civilization as we know it' (again).

First, the facts. An NHS pilot scheme is offering the Pill to teenagers in pharmacies without prescription in Southwark and Lambeth, two London boroughs.
