Women and AIDS

HIV/AIDS is now the leading cause of death worldwide in women of reproductive age. UNAids has launched a five year plan to deal with the gender inequality and human rights violations behind this epidemic.

The plan by the joint United Nations Programme is called Agenda for Accelerated Country Action for Women, Girls, Gender Equality and HIV (2010-2014).

Circumcision and HIV/AIDS: 4

The king of the Zulus has issued an edict to bring back circumcision in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, two hundred years after it was abolished.

King Goodwill Zwelithini claims to be reintroducing the practice because it reduces HIV transmission but evidence for its effectiveness is contentious, as I have discussed here, here and here.

Circumcision and HIV/AIDS - II

Ritual circumcision is a different area but its practice in South Africa, for example, has important ramifications for the promotion of circumcision as an HIV/AIDS prophylactic.

This story was in the news this week:

Eight boys have died and three are in hospital after botched circumcisions in the South African province of Mpumalanga, officials say. The teenagers were at an initiation school in the town of Kwamhlanga. One of the initiates died in hospital and the seven others were found by health officials dead at the school.

Circumcision and HIV/AIDS - I

An article in the Independent on May 19 2009 reports that: "Three landmark randomised controlled trials conducted in South Africa, Kenya and Uganda between 2005 and 2007 demonstrated that adult male circumcision reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 50 to 60 per cent."

The RV144 HIV Vaccine trial results are out! Onwards and upwards chaps...

Yesterday saw the release of the paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine containing the hotly awaited data concerning the HIV vaccine trial that took place in Thailand. There was already some discussion of the initial results, which were reported in September and discussed by Colin and Martin. As has already been discussed, there is a very cautious consensus due to the statistical analysis of the trial only *just* falling on the side of significant.

An Analysis of the Thai AIDS Vaccine Trial

Dorian McIlroy has written an excellent guest post on the recent AIDS vaccine claims over at ViroBlogy which I'd like to pimp here.

See also my criticism of the media claims surrounding the trial here: "Are Recent AIDS Vaccine Claims Seriously Flawed?"

Here in Paris, the initial results from the Thai ALVAC/AIDSVAX vaccine trial have just been presented. The first presentation was by Dr Supachai Rerks-Ngarm, who was followed by Colonel Nelson Michael (who gave his presentation in uniform). This was a big double-blinded RCT, with more than 16000 participants, about 8000 people in each arm of the study. I am not a methodologist, but this trial does appear to me to have been very well-designed, carried-out, and analyzed. So I think one should unreservedly treat the results as high-quality.

Karri Stokely: The New Christine Maggiore of AIDS Denialism

This is a guest post by British doctor DeeTee. See more by DeeTee here.

The Myspace picture albums seem to capture a wonderful moment in time. The scene is idyllic. Sun-kissed palm trees are set against an azure Caribbean sky, and a happy couple delight in their holiday trip to the Florida Keys. Elsewhere, we can see photos of them with their children, a wholesome, all-American family enjoying everything life has to offer and dreaming of good times yet to come. But despite the glowing vitality that is projected in the photos, things are not what they seem. The woman you see is Karri Stokely, a 43 year old who was diagnosed with HIV infection when she was 29 years old. She is keen to share her story, and does so on several other websites and blogs. It should be a story of courage and hope, but I fear it will not turn out that way. For Karri has decided to completely ignore medical advice and forgo her HIV medication.

Are Recent AIDS Vaccine Claims Seriously Flawed?

"OMFG", cried the collective headlines of the worlds' news-starved press the other day, "there's a vaccine for AIDS!" This of course would be awesome news for people who enjoy sex (and terrible news for people who think sex is the Devil's work and should be punished by disease and pestilence) if it were true. But as soon as you start digging behind the headlines, the claims start to look very ropey indeed.

Homeopaths in cloud cuckoo land.

This is a guest post by British doctor DeeTee. See more by DeeTee here.

Sometimes I really wonder what planet the homeopaths live on. Recently the World Health Organisation responded to the concerns about the use of homeopathy in the developing world for serious diseases such as AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis and infant diarrhoea, all of which are diseases with a massive morbidity and mortality, and all of which can be treated with effective conventional medical therapies. I have pointed out this silliness previously.

Jeremy Sherr Responds to "The Inquisition"

[bpsdb] Well it seems that intrepid homeopath Jeremy Sherr has been busy on his blog. In a classic case of not having the balls to stand by your words, having edited posts and deleted comments, he's now deleted pretty much the entire blog save for three entries (fortunately the missing entries had been archived), the most recent of which is a response to the criticism he recently received. Here's a quick rebuttal of his response.
