Fundamentalist Exams on par with A-levels?

We’re a bit odd in the UK. Really. Sometimes touted as one of the more secular of countries, we often lapse into woolly-minded relativistic thinking of the Terry Eagleton variety. And that’s fine, up to a point. I mean, if you’re not hurting anyone, who are we to cause a fuss? But say you hurt someone because of it. What if your over-arching, bend-over-...

Does religious belief really quell uneasiness? What would your neurons say?

Religious belief quells uneasiness in life, right? Or that's the main reason why we assume people believe.

But, is this actually true?

Science vs Religion: To be Settled by Golden Goal

It's a question that just won't go away. Mary Midgley's comment is free article for the Guardian on 12th June, listed also on the science page, tries to examine whether evolution disproves the existence of God.

I would probably describe myself as an apatheist. I don't believe in God, but this doesn't really bother me, nor does the fact that other people hold opposing views. What I am interested in though is the quality and relevance of the argument.

What to do if your date turns out to be the wrong gender

Over the weekend, I had planned to meet up with someone new to my neck of the woods. They had emailed me a few months ago via another blog of mine to ask if I’d have any time to show them around a bit, maybe introduce them to some people they could make friends with. They were fresh out of Eastern Europe, coming to the UK to be an au pair. Naturally, I obliged. I know loads of people, especially people for whom “Eastern European au pair” would seem quite an appealing sort of person to get to know – exotic, caring, probably really good looking to boot.

In an odd but nonetheless interesting article by Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, this licentiousness breeds extremism.

My Yule (B)log

So who is thinking about the man who will bring us all a warm and happy feeling of cheer on Christmas Day? No, I don’t mean the man behind the counter at Threshers.

Santas
Santa Claus didn’t visit the baby Jesus in the manger, but you’ve probably remembered that bit. So had Reverend Paul Nedergaard, who upset the citizens of Copenhagen in 1958 by reminding them that he was a ‘pagan goblin’.

How (Not) To Handle Rejection

Hello and welcome to another edition of me preaching the controversy!

Last week, we discussed my absolute favourite method for asking out your true love. How did it go? If it went well, you're probably reading this on some train from fuck-knows-where, having had very little sleep the night before - you saucy minx you ;-) If it didn't go well, you might be heartbroken, despondent, and generally down in the dumps. But fear not you pretty little specimen of humanity! Help is at hand...

Dating Advice for Geeks

Hello dearest internet nutters and demi-gods alike,

Have you missed me? I'm sure you're bored of me apologising for not being able to blog daily, even my Twitter feed has been running a bit dry as of late, so I'll just crack on with the meaty post, shall I? (Incidentally, vegetarianism is doing well, euphemisms shall continue as normal... normal for me anyway).

This blog post has been brought to you today by the number 4.
